Is it covered or Not?

Vice president of Personal Lines Operations at Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company in Neenah, Wis., Mike Maley says, “Many people still have the false impression that their jewelry is fully covered by their homeowners policies.” “What they don’t realize is that unless their loss is from fire, theft, or some other cause specifically mentioned in their policy, it may not be covered.”
Also, coverage for the theft of your items of jewelry is typically limited to $1,000. If this loss happens in the event of a burglary, this is hardly the amount in which to cover a $5,000 ring, not to mention the rest of your jewelry. According to Maley, tells us that over half of reported losses are from chipped diamonds or the loss of just one stone. People are shocked to realize that everyday activities such as sports or washing dishes can cause this type of loss.
This insurance is well worth the cost you pay and has affordable rates. Maley reminds us, “You would never drive your car without making certain it was fully insured, so why take a similar risk with an expensive item that is so easily damaged or lost?”
If you received jewelry this past holiday season, make sure you check to see if that it is fully covered under your homeowners insurance policy.
