Your Geographic Location

When insurers are pricing your auto policy, they will take into consideration your geographic location. Also, but not limited to, is your claims history, driving record, gender, age, the type and amount of auto insurance purchased and the type of car you are driving.
Those living in a city will pay more for auto insurance than those who live in the rural areas. This is because of the likelihood of accidents or theft will be higher in those areas. Another factor is the weather in your area. If your area has extreme weather conditions or you live in a remote area where there are few hospitals or doctors, you will likely pay a higher rate. State law can also require car owners to buy a minimum amount of bodily injury coverage. All of the states except for three: Tennessee, New Hampshire and Wisconsin are required to by a minimum amount of liability insurance.
According to 2005 studies, the five states with the highest premiums were: New York, Rhode Island, Maryland, D.C. and Louisiana. Maine, Iowa, Vermont, Idaho and Wisconsin are the five states with the lowest premiums in 2005.
